The North of England has already proven to be fertile ground for growing great singing talent, with several of our star performers and winners coming from northern cities. As part of our search for this year’s competition champion, we embarked on a three-day whistle-stop tour of some well-known northern towns and cities to see what we could find.
A group of our Junior Star Singer Songwriter stars came together for a wonderful summer showcase in Mayfair’s Hatchetts venue in Central London on 24th July.
On a balmy evening in the middle of the recent heatwave, artists were interviewed by main presenter Amanda Neale and then sang their hearts out to a packed audience.
Performers included past and present Junior Star Singer Songwriter winners Kasey Wray Wooderson, Chloe Dunne and Billie and Louie Hughes. They were also joined by presenter for the new JSS Theatre Star show, Scott Thornhill; our JSS presenters for JSS Extra South and JSS Extra North, Georgia Myers and Emily Taylor Smith; co-presenter Rachael Summers, new contestant Ruby Jahnke and contestant from last year Sarah Johnston.
It’s hard to keep up with the Junior Star Singer creator, Amanda Neale, who has accomplished so much in the music industry. She has worked in most positions you can think of in the music industry, from production, to mentoring, to even having been a popstar herself. Therefore, of course, who better than Amanda to coach young artists and guide them on their way to stardom?
It’s evident from her work that Amanda keeps JSS very close to her heart, but how did the company founder come up with it in the first place? Here she is to tell us more…
Our Georgia Lois shares her top three tunes guaranteed to get your toes tapping!
Scott Thornhill first entered Junior Star Singer a couple of years ago as a young contestant for West Side Radio in London. Based in Coulsdon, he is a drama enthusiast, keen to sing in musicals, and perform in local plays and theatre, having done so on numerous occasions. Now being mentored through Junior Star Singer Songwriter, Scott has already recorded his first demo. He will be performing some great favourites on the tour later this year with various piano tracks.
Scott is also producing and directing his own play later this year, a first time project with a view to branching out also into this field as a career. He will be co-ordinating auditions later in the summer. We caught up with Scott during one of his mentoring sessions. He tells us:
“I have struggled with things like depression and anxiety in the recent years of my life and those things combined can really drag you down. whenever I am playing music, whether it is singing, playing the keyboard etc I feel like I can just release those negative thoughts through my music to make space for positive ones. This has helped me put more feeling and emotions into my music, making it feel more real and heartfelt. “
Look out for Scott Thornhill on the JSS tour, he is also the new presenter this year for ‘Behind the Mic’ which speaks to contestants behind the scenes.
