The meaning behind ‘Weak’ by Temi

For so many reasons, 2020 will be a year that will be hard to forget. Aside from Covid-19, one moment that shook the world was the unlawful death of George Floyd, which sparked global protest as people from all sides campaigned for an end to racism and persecution against people based on the colour of their skin. It was these events that inspired Temi Atiba to write her song ‘Weak’ – find out more below:

My new song ‘Weak’ is very meaningful to me, as it addresses all the injustices in the world from a general protester point of view. It was inspired by everything that has been faced over the years such as police brutality and how 2020, even though it seemed like a negative year, was a year of change and development. It was a year of protesting for what is important. People may have felt lost or as if they were dying, but sticking in groups to win is most important. Standing up for each other is how we survive.

Even though it seemed like a negative year, 2020 was a year of change and development

No Justice. No peace. My song is a message of that and a message of strength and power, despite the title! It’s a statement saying “I know what I’m fighting for, I know how I feel and how everyone else feels but no matter what, they can’t win”

I’ve included the lyrics below. I hope you like them and can find way to interpret the song in your own way for your own battles.

WEAK

Verse

Started off in thick crowds

Tryna find my way out

Echoing through my head

Are the words they said

Against me

The new war’s starting now

Thought the barriers came down

I guess they’re still up so strong

What’s going on

In this world

Time is running out

Clock is ticking down

Life is fading out

Chorus

I hear wailing in the streets.

Glass on the floor and blood is all I see.

I, I can hardly breathe

Gas all around me, that’s why I feel so weak

It’s why I feel so weak

(I’m cold, I’m lost, Im dying

My heart is sold, no money to buy it

I have lost all hope, can’t fight no more

They’ve drained me of what’s left of my soul) X2

VERSE

They say stay in group and you’ll win

Still tryna find our way in

They fighting us all along

Tryna push us down but we won’t surrender

Cause the new wars starting now

We bring the barriers right down

Break the one by one

So we can move on

In our world

Time is running out

Clock is ticking down

Life is fading out

Chorus

I hear wailing in the streets.

Glass on the floor and blood is all I see.

I, I can hardly breathe

Gas all around me, that’s why I feel so weak

It’s why I feel so weak

(I’m cold, I’m lost, Im dying

My heart is sold, no money to buy it

I have lost all hope, can’t fight no more

They’ve drained me of what’s left of my soul) X2

Bridge

I hear wailing in the street

But I won’t let them, know or see Im weak yeah

Even Though I can hardly breathe

They can never know that i feel weak

X2

Chorus

I hear wailing in the streets.

Glass on the floor and blood is all I see.

I, I can hardly breathe

Gas all around me, that’s why I feel so weak

It’s why I feel so weak

(I’m cold, not lost, surviving

My heart is Gold, They tried to deny it

I have my hope, I’ll fight some more

They think they drained away my soul) X2
