Taking Pride in our performance

By Billy & Louie Hughes

Following on from a charity event to raise money for this year’s Swindon and Wiltshire Pride festival that we sang at last year, we were delighted to be welcomed back for the festival, this time on the main stage in front of thousands of people!

We’ve been looking forward to this event since the beginning of the year when we were first contacted about it. We knew that there would be a lot of people watching us but we didn’t expect the audience we had on the day! Although the weather wasn’t as nice as we had wanted, it didn’t stop us and the audience from singing and dancing along!

We arrived and checked in with the backstage management team to collect our backstage passes and then we met a few of the performers and Pride team before our set who were equally as exited to perform as we were. About half an hour before we appeared on stage, we slipped out one of the stage doors to talk and take photos with some of our supporters who were at the front of the stage, waiting for us to sing.

…the weather wasn’t as nice as we had wanted, but it didn’t stop us and the audience from singing and dancing along!

We started our set with a couple of Aretha Franklin tracks as they always go down well with any crowd we sing to and no gig we do would be complete without a tribute to our all-time favourite soul artist. We sang a mixture of Jazz, Soul, pop and blues tracks including our very own track ‘Changed’ which we released on all platforms on this day. We soon found out that ‘Changed’ has a very catchy melody as we could hear lots of people singing along with us!

We then sang a Christina Aguilera mashup as she is our favourite singer and we knew the audience would love to dance and sing to these upbeat classics and to end this mashup, we sang ‘beautiful’ which was very fitting for the event!

One of the highlights of the event for us was hearing and watching the audience sing and sway along to purple rain. As soon as we started to sing Purple Rain by Prince, the grey clouds floated over us and it rained for the rest of our set – at least the rain itself wasn’t purple! However, this didn’t deter the audience from having fun. Everyone stayed for our set after hearing Purple Rain which was made even more magical by the smoke machine, purple stage lights and the rain.

It was such an enjoyable event and we loved watching everyone expressing themselves and having a great time! We can’t wait till next year!
